Special emphasis on melt extrusion and granulation technologies
Leistritz will host its’ Pharmaceutical-Nutraceutical Extrusion Seminar on June 6-7, 2018 that will focus on the latest melt extrusion and granulation technologies for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products. This “hands-on” seminar starts with the basics and explains why the continuous twin screw extrusion process is the preferred manufacturing method to make a consistent and repeatable dosage delivery mechanism. Some of the topics include:
- Twin screw extrusion theory and design: co-rotating and counterrotating
- Screw and process section fundamentals
- Upstream and downstream technologies
- Die design and computer modelling
- Staging of unit operations to facilitate continuous mixing and drying
- Scale-up of the extrusion process- R&D, pilot scale and production
- Cleaning and maintenance of extrusion equipment in a cGMP environment
- Equipment and process validation practices and documentation
- Advantages of continuous extrusion as compared to batch processes
- New emerging extrusion technologies, i.e. supercritical foaming and in-line drying
“Hands-on” demonstrations at Leistritz process laboratory will include:
- nano-16 twin screw extrusion system processing 50 gram batch samples
- Film/lamination extrusion system as used for transdermal or dissolvable film applications
- Melt extrusion of poorly soluble active ingredients
- Foaming of an extrudate via sCO2 injection
- Wet and melt granulation
- Interactive screw design, assembly and disassembly session
Classroom sessions are held at the Holiday Inn in Clinton, NJ, and extrusion demonstrations at the nearby Leistritz Process Laboratory in Somerville, NJ.
In addition to Leistritz staff, experts from industry and academia will contribute to the program content, including:
- Shaukat Ali, BASF
- Firouz Asgarzadeh, Evonik Degussa
- Bob Bessemer, Conair Group
- Jim DiNunzio, Merck
- Tom Durig, Ashland Specialty Ingredients
- Costas Gogos, Polymer Processing Institute
- Tony Listro, Foster Delivery Science
- Kevin O’Donnell, Dow Food, Pharma & Medical
- Pete Palmer, Wolock & Lott
- Michael Thompson, McMaster University
- Feng Zhang, University of Texas at Austin
- Others to be added
Handout materials: In addition to the presentation materials, attendees will receive a copy of the recently published 2nd edition of the textbook Pharmaceutical Extrusion Technology (a $300 value). See below for details:
