hamos Electrostatic Separation Tackles Difficult Materials

Many talk about recycling – hamos makes it happen

February 2018 – hamos GmbH Recycling- und Separationstechnik supplies equipment and systems for metal separation as well as plastic sorting and recycling applications. Through years of experience and the continuous development of their product line they have become a leading supplier of separation and recycling technology.

hamos equipment is brought to you by eFACTOR3.

As a small, independent company, hamos has succeeded in establishing itself as a leader in the electrostatic separation industry. Today more than 400 hamos KWS and EKS machines are in operation worldwide. “Made by hamos” the NAME in electrostatic separation that you can trust.

hamos offers a wide range of machinery to find the optimum solution for your separation needs. Through continuous research and cooperation with the Recycling Industry hamos has developed
technical solutions for the separation materials that were considered inseparable in the past.

Black plastic separation – The challenge
With minimal effort, the hamos EKS separates mixed materials into clean, single polymer fractions. hamos uses tribo-electric technology to selectively charge homogenously mixed plastics, giving one polymer (e.g. ABS) a positive charge and the other (e.g. PS) a negative charge. The separation is performed in a high voltage electrode system. These tribo-electric effects on which our technology is based, work independent of color, so that even completely black mixtures can be separated effectively. This makes the hamos EKS the ideal machine for the separation of mixed black plastics such as from WEEE or toner cartridge recycling. Through this system, polymers can be separated to a >98% purity. For best results with complex mixes, such as WEEE, a float sink technology may be necessary upstream of the hamos system. If necessary, hamos can help with consultation on this technology to ensure proper design.

Products
hamos offers an extensive range of machines and systems for the electronic and electrostatic separation of metals, plastics, and other bulk materials. While the electrostatic separation of mixed plastics, minerals and mixtures of Plastics and Metal are hamos bread and butter, they also supply all-metal detection systems.

As a supplier of machines hamos also offers complete turnkey solutions for applications such as e-scrap, cables or PVC window profiles to name a few..

The hamos product range extends even further with color sorting equipment as well as specialized equipment and solutions for your unique application.

Electrostatic Plastic Separation
Dry and efficient separation of mixed plastics
Many mixed plastics cannot be separated with common processes such as density or optical sorting. These mixes tend to have similar properties (i.e. specific weight, bright colors, mechanical properties) that make their separation through traditional methods obsolete and inefficient. hamos provides an alternative with the hamos EKS electrostatic plastic separator. These dry process
lines separate plastics into pure fractions, independent of the color and specific weight that plague optical or density separators.

Electrostatic plastic separators: applications
A typical application for the hamos EKS electrostatic separator is the recycling of PVC window profiles. In order for the PVC from these profiles to be used again, it is essential that all non-PVC materials are removed from the regrind mixture. Rubber and plasticized PVC seals and other co-extruder polymers included in the production process present a particularly difficult problem in the re-use of these materials. The hamos EKS effectively removes this contamination from the PVC, allowing it to be re-used in new applications.

Using this process allows for not only the recycling of production waste, but also for the processing of used windows, doors, reinforced roller blinds, and similar products. The purity level of the PVC that can be achieved with the hamos Technology from these very complex material streams is unmatched by other separation technology and fulfills the high quality standards of the PVC in window industry.

More than 40 different mixed materials and combinations have been separated into individual fractions with the EKS separator, opening the door for new avenues in the recycling field. Examples include: ABS/PS (e-scrap), PET/PVC (beverage containers), PP/PE (packaging), and ABS/PMMA (automotive tail light). In industrial applications, the EKS electrostatic separator combines low operational costs with high efficiency separation performance. Return on investment for electrostatic separation lines is generally very short due to the creation of cleaner material streams that are considered higher value commodities from previously non-separable material mixtures.

Separate valuable materials with hamos electrostatic separators New recycling challenges demand innovative solutions

hamos KRS – Recycling systems for WEEE plastics

Electrostatic separation Technology creates opportunities to process materials which conventional processes cannot handle. hamos electrostatic separators produce clean fractions in a dry and efficient way, liberating them from contaminants and unwanted polymers. When composite materials (such as cables or circuit boards) are recycled, easily separable coarse fractions are formed, but they also contain a lot of fine dust that is rich in non-ferrous metals such as copper and aluminum. These fine fractions are difficult to separate through conventional methods, but the hamos KRS series makes this type of fines separation a breeze.

Separation can also be difficult with mixed plastic materials that have small or even non-existent differences in physical properties (e.g. PET/PVC or ABS/PS.) These niche cases are where electrostatic separation shines, allowing previously impossible to process materials to be separated into pure single material fractions.

Electrostatic sorting
Electrostatic separation technology can also be used to efficiently separate materials from mixed fractions. Even extremely fine conductive materials (e.g. non-ferrous metals) can be separated from non-conductive materials such as plastics with aid of electrostatics.
